Advanced Style

Advanced Style is Ari Seth Cohen’s blog-based ode to the confidence, beauty, and fashion that can only be achieved through the experience of a life lived glamorously. It is a collection of street fashion unlike any seen before—focused on the over-60 set in the world’s most stylish locales. The (mostly) ladies of Advanced Style are enjoying their later years with grace and panache, marching to the beat of their own drummer. These timeless images and words of wisdom provide fashion inspiration for all ages and prove that age is nothing but a state of mind.

Ari Seth Cohen started his blog inspired by his own grandmother’s unique personal style and his lifelong interest in the put-together fashion of vibrant seniors. Each of his subjects sparkles like a diamond after long years spent refining and perfecting their individual look and approach to life. The Advanced Style book will showcase, in luscious full-color, the best of the blog, but will also act as a true guidebook with all-new material featuring wardrobes, interviews, stories, and advice from a cadre of his most chic subjects, along with a large selection of never-before-seen photography—fresh off of sidewalk catwalks around the world! - Advanced Style @ Amazon

THIS. This is the next book I plan to add to my vastly growing collection of fashion books (Taschen 100 Contemporary Fashion Designers is a must have!). The book has stemmed from a blog, which I came across courtesy of my other blog obsession (www.babewalker.com) and it's safe to say I've found my next obsession...

The Countess of Glamour: Lynn Dell

Joyce Carpati

The absolutely fabulous Carola

These women inspire me more than anyone in their respective 20's - 50's. These ladies have taken years to find and perfect their own individual styles and they are nothing less than abso-fucking-lutely fabulous. Along with Advanced Style being a regular 'street-style' blog featuring the over 60 crowd, it also has some great sub-sections including The Countess of Glamour Speaks, dedicated to the fabulous Lynn Dell (pictured above).

One of my favorite sections has to be Ilona Smithkin: Wisdom From A 90 Year Old Lady who is so, so incredibly inspiring. She says some of the greatest things I've ever heard, like this:

and this....

Ilona has a more optimistic view on life than 99.9% of the people my age, including myself, that I know. I strongly suggest going and checking out all of the videos posted of Ilona on Advanced Style, as well as browsing around and seeing how creative, fabulous and lovely all the ladies featured are. Take what these women have to say to heart, they've had the time to learn and love life. I really appreciate their willingness to share their wisdom and refined (albeit sometimes eccentric) personal styles.

Check out the site, buy the book and TRUST because these women know their shit.

#WhiteGirlProblems

Have White Girl Problems? Probably not but it's fun to complain about bullshit... If you've heard of that "FirstWorldProblems" trend, you probably get the idea, except having a white girl problem makes you one billion times more cool.

I'm not even sure when or where I came across the whitegrlproblem twitter account - that has over 700,000 followers and you should be one of them. I'm assuming through the #whitegirlproblem hashtag she and many others use to identify their bullshit complaints. Enter Babe Walker, the girl who runs the twitter account. On top of the twitter account she also has an ingenious blog of the same name, White Girl Problems , that discusses a variety of topics - including her 'Ask Babe' section where she gives 'advice' to other rich bitches (and bros). She has been described by TIME magazine as 'the epitome of the urban socialite you love to hate' and has a New York Times best selling book also by the same name

Unfortunately I haven't had the time to read it yet, but I have read the available online chapters (www.babewalker.com). Here's a little something from White Girl Problem #21: Every Job I've Had is The Worst Job I've Had for you to love....

This Babe Walker has got to be a joke right?!

Well, kind of but not really Babe Walker is, in fact, a character made up by these people:

(L to R) Tanner Cohen, David Oliver Cohen and Laura Schoenhals are the brilliant minds behind Babe Walker and White Girl Problems. The article over at The Daily Mail  (where I also got that photo above) states "Television actors and brothers Tanner, 25, and David Oliver Cohen, 31, along with their friend, Lara Schoenhals, 27, were inspired by modern day celebrities who they feel are out of touch with reality. Speaking about the idea for Babe Walker, the only female member of the creative trio told The Daily Beast: '[It] is a culmination of this moment in pop culture that celebrates women who have a lot of money, a lot of shit to bitch about - but no real reason to be unhappy.'" Another article I read says the character took a lot of components from the likes of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.

"Over the course of a meal with Schoenhals and the Cohen brothers, “Babe” is talked about not only as if she were a real person—she’s referred to as the fourth friend in their clique who simply couldn’t make it to lunch. “She’d be eating at that table,” Schoenhals says. “Her back would be turned to us, and she would get the butter lettuce and tomato salad—no croutons, no shallots, no vinaigrette. One tomato.” (Authors On Babe Walker) and to me, she will always be Babe Walker, definitely someone who you'll want to follow... the bitch you'll love to hate.

And until you become as obsessed with her as I am... here's a video of Babe at the Chris Benz Spring 2012 fashion show for you to love and enjoy.

Have a kickass week Bitches and Bros. Namaste.

now I see through your eyes, all that you did was love.

Growing up as a nineties kid, I no doubt loved 'The Spice Girls' and my Momma always favored a particular song....

..... Did you guess yet?

As a kid and even into my teen years I didn't really get it. I mean, I got that it was about loving your mom and I love my mom, so I liked it. As I got older and my momma and I began to get close, I mean we were always close but growing up and coming into adulthood gave us the chance to connect on a level where I was finally beginning to realize she wasn't a "being a bitch" when I couldn't go to a party or when I got in shit for smoking/smoking pot in high school... She cared about me. She didn't want me doing things I would regret or that could hurt me. She is my protector and it's her human nature to want what's best for me. Maybe it's a growing up thing, maybe it's a me thing, but the Spice Girls seemed to feel the same way and I'm guessing there's some others out there too. But this isn't an entry about me or my revelations on life or The Spice Girls. It's about my motivator, my inspiration, my best friend and my rock;

Me (14, I think?) and my lovely momma, Roxanne, in Hawaii '06

It's an old photo, Rox isn't huge on photo-ops even though she should be because she's gorgeous. Anyway I'm not going to get too over the top with anything here but here are few things I strongly admire and respect about my mother (not that I don't admire and respect everything she does... these are just some things I find extra inspiring) that have had a huge impact on me;
She's one of the strongest women I know for numerous reasons. She's open and honest with me about life and everything to do with it since I was young. I had boundaries growing up, believe you me, but I was never discouraged when it came to my independence and finding myself. Which leads me to my mothers incredible independence, that, even as a married mother she has always retained. Her willingness and bravery, including going back to school just this year because she had always wanted to learn about psychology/psychiatry, which to me is so empowering and inspiring. She's compassionate and accepting of people from any and all walks of life, I'm proud to have those qualities she instilled in me. She's my (and has been many others) number one motivator in anything I choose to set my mind to... she doesn't just tell me I can do something, she always believes I can. She is my rock - my support, my guidance and she keeps me grounded - Not only a mother but a best friend who I can talk to about anything without ever worrying about judgement. I feel like the most fortunate daughter and if I were to ever use the term 'blessed' this would be where it would apply.
Of course, I'm not sure how many of my readers have moms/moms they get along with and I apologize if I left some of you feeling 'left out' because I do think these hallmark holidays are kinda bullshit but I like celebrating my mom and all she's done for me throughout my life - so I'm on the Mothers/Fathers Day bandwagon... but I still agree with Kelly Cutrone in that she thinks the two should be combined into 'Parents Day' to be slightly less alienating  (If you want some female guidance written in a clever, honest way I'd suggest Kelly's book 'Normal Gets You Nowhere' (covered on tatteredtights and probably will be on here again).

To all those mothers have a wonderful day and to all of you who do have mothers... treat your moms like every day is mothers day (and dads like it's always fathers day, too!), adoptive parents, guardians, whomever was someone in your life who was a strong inspirational figure - always give them the respect they deserve, they've done a lot for you.

Have a lovely Sunday Bitches and Bros.

The Hottest Bitch Ever

FRANCES BEAN COBAIN

Okay if you don't live under a fucking rock, Frances Bean Cobain is the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love; The grunge power-couple of the 90's (and may he rest in peace). As everyone knows Kurt passed away eight years ago last month while Courtney manages to stay semi-relevant pissing people off with twitter rants (but I still fucking love her).

But this isn't about Kurt and Courtney, this is about how much of a badass/kickass/smart/stunning woman Frances Bean is in her own right. For starters it's really fucking cool that interned at Rolling Stone Magazine in 2008, that would kind of be (one of my many) dream(s) come true. Then in 2010 she held her first art show titled Scumfuck at L.A's La Luz De Jesus Gallery.

Scumfuck; graphite & ink on paper, 8.25″ x 5 3/8″ in 10″ x 8″ frame

 Celestial Splendor; graphite, ink & glitter on paper; 12″ x 14.5″ in 16″ x 20″ frame

She did all of these pieces under the pseudonym 'Fiddle Tim' (I got these photos from flavorwire.com and you can see more here). Her pieces are really interesting and potentially controversial, and I love that.
She keeps a pretty low profile, rarely doing interviews or big events. She does, however, do photo shoots. And fucking amazing ones at that. Tonight, my friend Caitlyn posted a few photos of Frances Beans photo shoot with famed photographer Hedi Slimane. I needed to see them all and within minutes I was looking at one of... scratch that, the most gorgeous/raw/amazing photo shoot I'd seen in some time. I'm totally obsessed, not to mention she has some kickass tattoos. So naturally, I decided I had to share my select favorites (which by the way is almost all of them)...

Okay. So, believe it or not there's a few photos from the set I haven't posted and you can see them at HEDI SLIMANE ROCK DIARY.

But seriously... FUCK ME! Is she not the most stunning, intriguing woman ever? Too bad if you said 'No' because you're wrong. She totally is; But too bad again because Isaiah Silva of the Rambles got there first and they announced their engagement sometime last year.

Anyway, you're welcome for all the visual pleasure and I do suggest developing a strong obsession with Frances Bean Cobain.
Happy Hump-Day bitches and bros.

Don't Trust the B**** in Apartment 23

So, basically, Krysten Ritter is a fucking babe and I'm kind of obsessed with her.

I thought she was amazing on Breaking Bad and her character, Chloe, in the new ABC show 'Don't Trust the B**** in Apartment 23' is fucking gold; IMDB describes Chloe as a New York party girl with the morals of a pirate, who bullies and causes trouble for her naive small town roommate, June. Oh, and her best friend just happens to be James Van Der Beek. Yes, James Van Der Beek plays a character version of himself on the show (who's slightly self-absorbed and very much riding off of his 'Dawson' fame) and I'm more in love with James than I ever was with Dawson.

It's fresh, it's fun, it's provocative and doesn't follow regular cable tv rules but alas, someone is too lazy to monitor their children watching television and needs to be a party pooper for the rest of us. It should come as no surprise that said party poopers are the women over at 'One Million Moms'... the same assholes who said Ellen DeGeneres was a bad role model because she's openly gay.

In an open statement to anyone who tries to get 'inappropriate shows' off-air because they may influence your children... either monitor anything and everything your child watches with parent blocks or your presence and if you can't do that, then don't own a television or keep it in a locked room

Anyway if you're cool, you'll probably like this show... if you like dirty humor, promiscuity, being inappropriate and offensive and strange outcomes from a strange group dynamic, you'll love this show.

Ch-ch-check out the preview, download the past episodes and program your TiVo now;

Don't Trust the B**** in Apartment 23 airs Wednesdays on ABC and CityTV but unfortunately I can't find the listings online so you're on your own.
Have a good weekend bitches and bros and don't forget to replenish those electrolytes ;)

That is not a drug. It’s a leaf!

"When you smoke the herb, it reveals you to yourself" - Bob Marley

I think everyone who knows me knows how much I love the sticky icky. I'm fortunate enough to live in a province and city that acknowledge the benefits of marijuana and are very lenient on the topic; I'm a member of The Vancouver Cannabis Dispensary and have been for almost a year how... I would be a complete liar to say that I don't just enjoy smoking pot, but since having my medical card (anxiety, insomnia and arthritis) I have said good-bye to the countless number of prescription medications I've been put on throughout the years.

And although I'm thankful for the physical and mental relief I've had from smoking, I think the most important thing I've gained from my experiences smoking marijuana is how heightened my spirituality and sense of self has become.

The culture in itself is amazing, I've never experienced a sesh full of anger and I've never seen anyone get too out of hand on a 4/20 celebration. Stoners are (for the most part) incredibly peaceful people who just want to mellow out. I have a hard time with legalization because I don't think the government knows what they're doing in terms of proper growing and curing techniques... I just want decriminalization. I want otherwise perfectly law-abiding citizens to stop being made to be criminals for partaking in a spiritual, medicinal or fun practice that harms no one.

Don't get me wrong, I completely understand marijuana isn't for everyone and I respect that but I think the respect should only be returned in accepting that to some people it's been a miracle, maybe even a life saver. Of course I could go on and on correcting propaganda with facts but I'm hoping none of you believe any of the bullshit propaganda about marijuana anyway... and if you do, well then I think you're probably naive and ignorant.

Anyway the reason for this particular post is that I will be partaking in the Global Marijuana March this Saturday; The oh so trustful Wikipedia (Global Marijuana March Wikipedia) describes the march as a celebration embracing cannabis culture as a personal lifestyle choice. Participants unite to discuss, promote, entertain and educate both consumers and non-consumers alike.
I love pot culture, I support pot culture... I will be a stoner until I die, or unless life forces me to 'cut back'. Now go bust up some of that OG Kush or NY Sour Diesel, pack a fat bowl and light up... I'll be doing the same, and until next time I'll leave you with a classic song for smoking up...
